Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kingsville District Curriculum

In Math, students learn about obtaining precise measurements, analyzing data, selecting tools and strategies, processes for reasoning and proving, and making connections using abstract reasoning. Different mathematic topics provide students with the range of problem-solving skills required during their high school career, and more importantly, in how they approach problem-solving generally.

Science offers students many opportunities beyond the content knowledge and scientific principles of inquiry which are the basis of science education. There are significant learning opportunities in environmental studies and in fields of technology. With the increase in green and alternative technologies, the schools are responding with curriculum that teaches students what they need to know to pursue college or career work in such a field. This is one the goals of the curriculum, to be responsive to the needs of students in ensuring they are prepared to follow through with their interests and talents.

Chalk Talk: Sharing Time

Sharing time is important in the classroom, as it allows students to share their work with others and gain different perspectives from their peers. Some students may be uncomfortable sharing their work, but if teachers make it a routine activity in their classroom and create an environment of respect that lacks judgment, students can become more self-confident and even enthusiastic about their work. A great time for teachers to incorporate sharing time is during writer's workshops, and it is in fact recommended in the procedure. Also, it is beneficial for teachers to incorporate sharing time during math so that students can share the work they did to come up with answers to problems and explain how and why they did it their way. Teachers can ask students who solved the problem in different ways to share so that students learn and understand multiple ways to solve the problem. Teachers should make sure to give students equal opportunity to share their work.
