Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kiryas Joel District Curriculum

A major focus on the New York State Curriculum is literacy in all subject areas. Students are expected to be able to read fiction and non-fiction and to use different comprehension and analysis skills when reading each. Reading for knowledge is expected at an early juncture and students also learn how to take notes from what they are reading and put the thoughts of others into their own words. This is followed by writing assignments that require students to draw upon the text and critically reflect on or analyze its meaning.

Students also learn how to collect and organize information such that they can effectively summarize their readings in written form. As part of their analyses, students learn to incorporate information from various sources to develop a deeper connection between the source material and the assigned reading. Each grade level receives developmentally appropriate instruction that prepares students for subsequent learning. This allows students to use prior knowledge and reflective thinking to develop an advanced understanding of a topic.

Chalk Talk: Time Management Strategies

Learning how to manage one's time is a key to success and helps relieve stress in daily life. Teaching young children how to manage their time involves both directly instructing children through step by step processes and also modeling the habits of time management. As kids get older, they may take on more responsibilities and activities. It may be necessary to weigh the benefits and consequences of completing certain tasks above others. Another key aspect of time management is staying organized and planning ahead. Keep a calendar and make sure to look at the next day’s responsibilities before making other plans. By getting into the habit of placing important tasks first, while honoring your personal needs, you may be able to find balance and still get the chance to check off your to-do’s.
