Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kissimmee District Curriculum

Elementary math students in Osceola County should be able to perform basic operations, measure, understand fractions, analyze shapes, construct graphs, tell time, compute decimals, factor numbers, use formulas, and simplify expressions. Middle school is spent exploring previously learned concepts more deeply and preparing for the more advanced concepts introduced in high school.

In elementary school, students also learn to sound out words, retell stories, read directions, write on different topics, use capitalization and punctuation, read out loud, extract the meaning of words, use reference materials, make presentations, and discuss information. Further on, students develop more analytic abilities with context clues, word roots, word relationships, recognizing author’s purpose, text features, elements of plot, descriptive/figurative language, cause and effect, and the validity and reliability of information.

Chalk Talk: How to Prepare Your Child for Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learners are better able to solve problems and pick up news skills, making them more successful. Here is how to get your child to become a lifelong learner. Engage them in conversations about their school assignments. This helps them to think beyond filling in the blanks with the correct answer. Limit television, video game, cell phone, and computer time. When kids are actively involved with some activity, they are obliged to recognize gaps within their knowledge and fill them. If your child asks a question, teach him or her to use available resources to find the answer. If he or she expresses interest in a topic, retrieve resources that foster learning in that area. Teaching your child how to learn will make him or her self-sufficient enough to obtain needed information when there are no teachers around.
