Kodiak District and Curriculum
The Kodiak Island Borough School District Curriculum is aligned to Alaska State Standards and Grade Level Expectations (GLEs). The K-5 math curriculum focuses on foundational concepts and skills in numbers and operations, algebraic thinking, measurement and data, and geometry. The middle school math curriculum is designed to help learners become mathematically literate problem solvers. Students apply the foundational content and skills learned in elementary school to solving more complex problems independently. The high school curriculum is designed to make high-level mathematics accessible to all students, while insuring that the most talented students are challenged. Students approach engaging problems independently or in collaborative groups.
In the elementary grades children learn to be scientific observers of their world. They learn science content and skill through hands-on activities in living laboratories such as school gardens. In middle school, the science curriculum focuses interactions among the chemical, earth, and biological sciences. Students explore the impact on these interactions on humans and the environment. High school students deepen their knowledge and skill in these core sciences. Courses such as Astronomy and Zoology appeal to students with special interest and talents. Kodiak Island’s unique geography, ecology, and wildlife provide opportunities for students to conduct authentic research in their own community.
We currently cover the following Kodiak-area school district: Kodiak Island Borough School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kodiak District Curriculum
The Language Arts curriculum addresses reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language usage. Middle school students explore increasingly complex fiction and nonfiction texts and practice the major forms of written expression. High school students read literary fiction and write critical responses, learn research writing and expand their communications skills to include making well-supported logical arguments orally and in writing. High school students do critical reading across all literary genres, examine classic film and become sophisticated in their ability to develop well-supported arguments in writing and speaking.
