Chalk Talk: Family Homework Assignments

A common topic of controversy is homework. No matter how hard schools try – they have a difficult time hitting ‘just the right note’ between too much homework and not enough. Some important tips to remember about homework include: homework time IS family time. Part of the reason that students are assigned homework is to get parents involved in their child’s education while allowing them to recognize their own child’s strengths and weaknesses and keep abreast of what the class is studying. Homework time should be part of the family routine. It reinforces the view that parents support school as a valid and valued part of the growing up process. If you are displeased with something about homework – contact the teacher and share your concerns. Contact your child’s teacher if you would like suggestions on family activities that support learning in general.
