Chalk Talk: Alternative Education in a Traditional District

Many school boards are coming to the realization that a traditional education doesn’t work for all students. The majority of children thrive in a traditional academic setting, but some children struggle. In order to address this issue, a growing number of school districts including the School District of La Crosse are funding alternative education options. There are many types of alternative education, but the most common is charter schools. Charter schools are still public schools, but have more freedom when it comes to state standards. This allows students to pursue education at their own pace and focus on areas that specifically interest them. Another option is a Montessori education where students learn by doing rather than formal verbal instruction. New alternative educational options have been popping up in districts all across America. These schools tend to focus specifically on one area of study like technology or the arts and instruct students in their given field. The advantage of these schools is that children learn valuable career skills through hands-on experience.
