Chalk Talk: Value of Mentoring for Students
Mentorship programs are becoming increasingly popular in today’s high schools. These programs help ease the transition for students entering their freshman year. Older students offer guidance and advice regarding a wide variety of issues, from bell schedules, to lunchtime procedures, to questions about classes and teachers. The camaraderie that develops between students also builds an environment of acceptance and inclusion, both between older mentors and their younger mentees, as well as among younger students who interact with each other in small group activities led by their mentor. Studies show that mentorship programs increase retention rates, reduce discipline referrals, and boost graduation rates. Schools have also noted an improvement in climate, including student attitudes and morale. With so many positive impacts that result from mentorship programs, they are sure to become more popular in the coming years.
