La Plata District and Curriculum
The Charles County Public Schools follow Maryland Content Standards which incorporate the nationally adopted Common Core frameworks into the instructional process. The goal of the frameworks is to promote rigorous academics in each subject and to recognize the alignments and connections between learning in different subjects. For instance, disciplinary literacy has become a major emphasis of the overall literacy goals so that students can appropriately apply their reading skills to different genres and subject matters. Students are also expected to participate in community service and character education programs during their school years.
We currently cover the following La Plata-area school district: Charles County Public Schools.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the La Plata District Curriculum
The curriculum is designed so that students progress through their subject area learning in a manner that is consistent and deepens knowledge in core topics of each subject over the years. Students are expected to reach mastery of each subset before they move on. For instance, elementary schools focus on numerical sense and operations, measurement, and geometry. These basic skills allow students to move on to more complex subsets like Algebra, Calculus, and Statistics.
Another focus is the College and Career Readiness strand of the Common Core Standards. These standards pushes for graduating students to have the communication and critical thinking skills necessary to either start college or start a career successfully. In order to facilitate this goal, many districts have started career pathway programs in which students in high school a put into academic groups based on their career interests. Options include Health Sciences, Business/Technology, and Engineering.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Getting Good Grades
Academic achievement is one of the most critical aspects of growing up; this does not mean that every child needs to get an A in every class, but every child needs to feel confident with their ability to learn and be successful in their learning. A number of age-specific and developmental factors will impact academic achievement, and parents will have to guide the process differently from elementary through middle to high school. If a child ever has an academic problem, discuss the source of the problem with them - lack of understanding, social problems, all can contribute. If the grades are lower than you would like, talk to the teachers about material that is difficult to understand. Students should be encouraged to ask questions in class and prepare wisely for tests. And if this too does not have the desired effect, look into tutoring or a peer study group. These are just a few ideas that will help students get good grades.
