Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lackawanna District Curriculum

Common Core focuses on building a bridge between academics and the real world, ensuring that students understand how the skills they are learning can be applied in the labor force, and in their daily lives. In Language Arts students learn how to read, write, listen and speak so that they can demonstrate their ability to control the English language. Comprehension and vocabulary building strategies are emphasized, and the development of writing for styles such as informational or reflective are central to learning.

In Mathematics, students develop computational abilities in their learning about geometry, algebra, measurements, statistics and probability. Skills such as quantitative reasoning, mathematical modeling, and critical analysis are developed at each grade level. The goal of both the Mathematics and Language Arts program is to help students become literate in both fields and able to apply these skills as needed in school and at home.
