The curriculum at Lackland Independent School District is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The district’s curriculum was designed with rigor in mind and seeks to prepare students for college and career. Likewise, students at each school take part in courses and activities that promote understanding of technology and other important 21st century skills. These skills and knowledge are acquired in and out of the classroom, with various extracurricular programs providing students additional opportunities for learning and growth. The district also offers a multitude of resources for students to achieve their highest potential.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lackland District Curriculum
In the elementary Language Arts curriculum, students are introduced to the basics of reading while also starting the rudimentary skills of analyzing stories and characters. The intermediate grade levels focus on phonics, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and handwriting. By the secondary grades, writing is focused on more, and students are reading and responding to more complex novels, poetry, and literature. Students are expected to have a firm grasp of grammar and spelling (although, many do not) and are not separately assessed on these things.
IIn Math, students develop problem-solving skills in numerical operations, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. Skills are broken down and often taught using a workshop model. These workshops begin with a focused lesson during which the teacher explicitly models specific skills; after that, students work on the skill(s)—problem solving—independently. Students will engage in math games, centers, and small-group and one-on-one instruction. Math workshops conclude with a group share to discuss students’ thinking and make sure they understand the “big ideas.”
