Educating Our Parents: Understanding the LaGrange District Curriculum
In Prekindergarten continuing through Second Grade, the instructional emphasis is for students to learn the basic tools required to read, write, and compute successfully. In the areas of reading and writing, this entails attaining mastery of phonics, sight words, increasing levels of vocabulary knowledge and comprehension. Students are also expected to be able to express ideas through well organized writing.
In Mathematics, students will be developing an understanding of numbers, their properties, how they operate, in addition to an introduction to measurement, money, and data. In third grade through fifth grade, students will continue to build upon these fundamental skills and are assisted in developing math literacy and communication skills. Computers and other technologies assist in aiding students in connecting abstract ideas to real world experiences; while preparing students for success in secondary and college course work.

Chalk Talk: Learning About Commitment
Many times our children want to try something only to decide that they wish to give up and quit. Many times their complaints are so heartbreaking that we surrender, and allow them to in fact quit. This is not a healthy pattern to allow our children to fall into. Whether it is a sports team, a club, or learning something new; if your child commits to participate you should force them to see it through. Explain that since they have committed people rely upon them and to quit would be selfish and unfair. Let them know that if they choose not to participate next year or whatever date is realistic that they will not be forced to recommit. You may be saying isn’t that mean? No, it is called seeing a commitment through and being a dependable person. Both lessons will improve their ability to function as an adult.
