Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lake in the Hills District Curriculum

In Mathematics and Science classes, students use critical and analytical thinking to solve problems, and evaluate and refine strategies for solving problems. The curriculum encourages students to have the opportunity to apply their acquired knowledge to problem-solving with real life experiences in the hopes that students will be well prepared for post-secondary education and entry into the work force.

In the English Language Arts curriculum, students are taught to read complex texts for comprehension and synthesis. In writing, they are taught to use a variety of techniques, resources, and technology to gather information, collect, organize, analyze, and retain that information as well as applying that information in order to build arguments and support theses. Students learn to communicate effectively by speaking effectively, writing clearly and expressively, and demonstrating good listening skills.

Chalk Talk: How To Choose a College

There are a few thousand 4-year colleges in the country, and narrowing them down to a manageable list can be difficult. A quick way to narrow it down is to specify what location you’d prefer, and which you absolutely don’t want, not only location in a particular part of the country, but whether you’d prefer a rural or an urban campus or something in between. After that, cost can be a good way to eliminate potential colleges. These are important things to consider, but when it comes to really picking the right college, there are a few details that really should be at the top of your list. The quality of a particular program you want to enter is important, but so is class size, faculty to student ratio, and support services.
