Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lake Jackson District Curriculum

When students begin their education, science is taught at the basic level. Students learn about seasons, plants and life cycles. Each year their education goes a little deeper until by high school they are able to take classes that focuses on specific areas of science. Students have the options of learning more in the area of Physics, or Aerospace Science or, if they desire they can explore ocean life in Aquatic Science.

The Reading curriculum at Lake Jackson Schools begins with teaching the students the basics of reading. They soon learn how to read selections for information. This allows them to share their thoughts with others. By the time they graduate, they will be able to read whole novels, like the "Lord of the Flies," or "Of Mice and Men" with a questioning mind. They are able to use the questions they form as the basis for analytic writing and are able to develop their own ideas about the themes they are reading about.

Chalk Talk: Vocabulary for SAT Success

When preparing for the SATs, students need to consider expanding their vocabulary. Each test may have different parameters for scoring, they all seem to consider certain words important. For example students should be aware the word ‘abstract’ means that something is not specific. To ‘alleviate’ means to help ease pain or burden and ‘cogent’ means convincing, reasonable. Other words for a student to be aware of are apathetic, comprehensive, eclectic, hackneyed, innovative and obdurate. When a student is preparing for the SAT, they need to take the time to look up words that they are not familiar with, they may help them score even better. Studying word roots is one of the most useful strategies a student can use to master a broader vocabulary.
