Chalk Talk: How to Introduce Your Child in Art History

Not many K-12 schools will offer its students art history. Yet, its content is rich in lessons and exploratory opportunities for children of all ages. Art history can bring the past to life, introduce children to other cultures, and spur creativity. Parents will most likely be left with the task of arranging trips to museums and locating books on the subject. While the prospect of preparing for a trip to the museum with little ones (or teenagers, even scarier) may be daunting, it is not impossible and will add depth to their knowledge. Starting small is important; be prepared to address their developmental capabilities and interests. For very young children, or even beginners, large, bold, and colorful work may be a great place to begin. The work of Pablo Picasso or Salvador Dali might spark their interests. For older children, adding context to discussions is important. Ask them to talk about the subject of art, or who they may think the artist is (don’t forget to ask why). These simple exercises will not only help them to understand historical themes and circumstances, but it will encourage them to enjoy art, for art’s sake.
