Lakewood District and Curriculum

Students in the Lakewood community are educated according to the curriculum established by the Jeffco Public School District. The Jeffco Public Schools are dedicated to providing all students with a challenging and comprehensive education in preparation for an academically and socially successful future. The District has made knowledgeable utilization of technology a major priority, and all grade levels participate in informational literacy programs using modern computers. Students can also choose from a variety of specialty programs such as Ascent Advanced Learning, Gifted and Talented, International Baccalaureate (IB), online independent learning, and outdoor laboratory education in addition to standard classroom courses.

Each educational discipline in the Jeffco Public Schools constructs a grade level specific cumulative curriculum map that guides student education. The Language Arts program has specified reading and writing as the two fundamental skills students must constantly develop to be successful in multiple subjects. Students are taught a reading curriculum that emphasizes comprehension of both informational and fictional texts through analysis of critical ideas and details. The writing curriculum reinforces proper sentence structure while focusing on the different purposes for using written communication. Students are expected to become proficient in both areas allowing for an advancing ability to use language as a learning tool.

We currently cover the following Lakewood-area school districts: Jeffco Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lakewood District Curriculum

The Mathematics Department is dedicated to providing a high quality environment where students both listen to and engage in their
personal education. Students in K-8 are taught mathematical fundamentals such as numerical structure and functions, data analysis
through mathematical measurement tools, and recognition of mathematical patterns. Students are also initially introduced to the basic
concepts of simple 2D geometry and then progress into more advanced course work.

The Science curriculum’s mission is to educate students to feel confident in their abilities to intelligently discuss scientific
issues in public forums. The curriculum focuses on the integration that both science and technology have made into many social and
personal aspects of everyday life. In many grade levels, science and social studies classes are frequently integrated to discuss
these interactions. Students are also expected to be knowledgeable in the basics of life, earth, and physical science. Advanced courses
use hands-on experimentation to introduce more advanced scientific principles while teaching students the process of scientific investigation.

Chalk Talk: How to Develop and Test a Scientific Hypothesis

Hands-on scientific experimentation is a cornerstone of the scientific curriculum at Lakewood Area Schools. In order to perform experiments, students should first understand the principle of a scientific hypothesis. A scientific hypothesis is a testable observation that will produce a rationale conclusion. Therefore, students should be able to ask a simple question that can be tested in a measurable way. Once a student has formed their hypothesis, they can go forward with experimentation. The student's experiment should test the question directly by employing standard objects and methods of measurement. Once the experiment is performed and the outcome is recorded, students can then accept or reject their hypothesis based on the experimental data.
