Spruce Street Elementary School is located on 90 Spruce St, Lakewood, NJ 08701, Spruce Street Elementary School covers grades PreK-5 and can be contacted at 732-905-3660. The staff at Spruce Street Elementary School are committed to creating a student-centred learning environment that is safe, nurturing, and embraces the cultures of all students. Their goal is to educate the whole child and help them prepare to be successful in a global society. Students in New Jersey follow a Model Curriculum that helps districts and school implement the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The curriculum standards cover English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Visual Performing Arts, and PE/Health. In grade 5 mathematics, the curriculum is divided into 5 units. The first unit focuses on students learning how to multiply multi-digit whole numbers. In unit 2, students focus on geometry, learning how to calculate volume and solve volume related word problems. In unit 3, decimals and fractions are added to the multiplication process. In unit 4, students extend their knowledge of the place value system and learn about multiplying and dividing fractions and whole numbers. Lakewood Middle School is located on 755 Somerset Ave, Lakewood, NJ 08701, Lakewood Middle School covers grades 6-8 and can be contacted at 732-905-3600. Lakewood Middle School is the only middle school in the Lakewood Public School district. School hours of Lakewood Middle School are 7:00am to 1:30pm. The school has a library and offers various clubs for its students to participate in, such as Maker’s Club. The school also offers a Middle School Summer Bridge Program for current 6th grade students transitioning to 7th grade and incoming 6th grade students. Like other students in the state of New Jersey, students at Lakewood Middle School are taught a curriculum that conforms to the standards of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. For example, students in 8th grade English Language Arts focus on units of Literature and Narrative Writing, and on Informational Texts and Expository Writing. When students write informative/explanatory writing, they should able to introduce a topic, develop it with well-chosen support, use transition words to create a cohesive piece of writing, and maintain a formal style throughout their writing. Emphasis is also placed on speaking and listening. Students participate in a variety of discussions, and learn how to build on their peer’s ideas and ask questions. Lakewood High School is located on 855 Somerset Ave, Lakewood, NJ 08701, Lakewood High School covers grades 9-12 and can be contacted at 732-905-3500. Lakewood High School was built in 1971. In the 2015-2016 school year, there were 1,192 students enrolled at the school. Lakewood High School offers an Achievement Academy program, where students who have difficulty with the traditional school program or have rejected it are enrolled. The Achievement Academy is an alternative education program, and is designed to help meet the needs of these students having difficulties and help support their needs and learning styles. In New Jersey, students must also take a standardized test called PARCC, the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers test. In 2018, the state voted to reduce the number of PARCC exams in high school from 6 to 4 exams. Only freshman and sophomores take the English and Math PARCC exams. According to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards students in grades 9 and 10 focus on World History in Social Studies, then US History in upper years.Teachers also try to incorporate the learning standards for English Language arts in their lesson plans. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lakewood District Curriculum
The curriculum at Lakewood Public Schools is carved from the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. Each school emphasizes basic skills in mathematics, critical thinking and oral and written communication. Their general and special education plans make use of pupils’ needs, abilities and interests and implement inclusive practices and programs.
In the early learning centers, students benefit from activities that encourage learning and stimulate the senses. A state-of-the-art Snoozelen room provides students with sensory experiences that enhance educatioal goals. Preschool and early elementary students learn through exploring books, tabletop activities and learning labs. Keeping Informed: Recent Lakewood Educational News
- Day of Silence - Students from Lakewood High School took a stand against bullying by participating in a school-wide day of silence. Students showed their support for those who have experienced “having no voice” by being the targets of discrimination and harassment. Many of the students who participated felt it was a worthwhile and eye-opening experience.
- Newspaper Returns - After a 3-year hiatus, the Pine Needle Monthly, Lakewood High School’s newspaper has been restored. The newspaper, which provides students with information about their school and allows writers to develop self-expression. The newspaper’s return is seen as a boost to “Piner Pride,” the overall feeling of pride and support of students and staff at Lakewood.
- Parent Academy - The beginning of 2013 saw the kickoff of the Parent Academy, a program which is partnered with Georgian Court University. The Academy is designed to help parents earn their own high school diploma, learn English, become American citizens and advocate more effectively for their children.

About Lakewood, New Jersey
Lakewood Township is located in Ocean County, New Jersey. The township covers an area of about 24.982 square miles, and before being named Lakewood, it was also named Bricksberg. The name “Lakewood” was chosen to emphasize the town’s location near lakes and pine forests. The town is known for its hometown feeling and historical charm. In the 1880s, Lakewood was a beautiful winter resort. Today, the town still keeps some of the parts of its heritage as a reminder of its past.
The town of Lakewood is within a convenient distance to Philadelphia, Trenton and New York City, being only an hour and a half away from each. The town is also easily accessible by road, being situated near the Garden State Parkway. Because of its location, construction projects in the city have continued to grow. In 2001, a 22 million dollar baseball stadium for the Lakewood Blueclaws was built. The town of Lakewood also offers multiple opportunities for participation in leisure and cultural activities. The town contains 15 free municipal playgrounds, a township park, lakes, three county parks, 2 public golf courses and multiple historical sites. Even though Lakewood looks like a small town, it still includes all the benefits of a small town life combined with an easy commute and accessibility to nearby big cities.
In 2017, the population of Lakewood Township was 102,682, making it the seventh most populated city in the state. The population consists largely of young people. 41.8% of the population was under 18, 10.3% of the population was between 18-24, 24.6% was from 25 to 44, 11.1% was 45-64, and 12.2% was over the age of 65. The median household income in the city was $40,966 in 2017.
Annual Events
There are lots of annual events that take place in Lakewood Township. One of these events is “Summer Carousel of Music”, where the Lakewood Municipal Band, Jazz Ensemble, and professional 30-piece big band give a series of free performances throughout the summer. Another popular event is The July 4th Concert and Fireworks. Before the fireworks display over Lake Carasaljo, the band performs an evening concert at the Lakewood Amphitheater. The Lakewood Lions Charity Renaissance Festival happens in September at the Village of Pine Park. Visitors to this festival can enjoy activities from the middle ages, including jousting, games, exhibits and demonstrations.
The Strand Theater
The historic Strand Theater is located in downtown historic Lakewood. Here, visitors can sit back and be entertained by broadway shows, dance, popular music, and shows by popular entertainers. The theater offers activities for senior citizens and theater camps for children and teens. The Strand Theater has been open since 1922, and previously acts such as George Burns, Taylor Swift, and Louie CK have performed there. The theater was built in a time where Lakewood was a place where the rich and famous relaxed and had fun. People such as President Grover Cleveland and John D. Rockefeller once stayed in Lakewood.
FirstEnergy Park
FirstEnergy Park is a baseball stadium home to the Lakewood BlueClaws, a minor league baseball team associated with the Philadelphia Phillies Major League Baseball team. The stadium was built in 2001 and has 6588 seats and 8000 seats with berm seating. The stadium is also used for outdoor concerts with musical artists such as Bob Dylan. The attendance record at the stadium was 13,003 people on August 26, 2002. Seeing Blueclaws games is a popular event for families. The team plays about 70 home game across the summer, and there are fireworks after every Friday and some Saturday home games.

- One of the largest yeshivas in the world, Beth Medrash Govoha is found in Lakewood. It wa established by Rabbi Aharon Kotler.
