Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lancaster District Curriculum

Schools only make progress towards meeting rigorous state standards when the needs of individual students are met. In Reading/Language Arts, students make gains in reading comprehension overall when students are directly instructed in finding main ideas in the passages they read, as well as being able to identify the best summary of passage content. Writing is also a significant portion of the Language Arts curriculum and students develop skills enabling them to write on complex topics based on their own research.

Enrichment areas such as Music, Art, and World Languages are seen as ways to engage a diverse student body, and meet the needs of individual children while they are attending school from pre-school through high school. The qualities students learn from participation enhance their education and progress through the standard school subjects. For example, an individual student who competes in sports learns essential skills that will carry over into other classes.

Chalk Talk: Student Leaders Are Made, Not Born

Not all students are born leaders, but many can be taught to lead. Student leaders focus on doing their best to make their community a better place. They recognize weak areas that need improvement as well as strengths, and aim for the goal. In addition, student leaders who get recognized for improvements they work toward, showed that they kept working to improve and didn't give up in the face of a huge goal. Tutors and mentors can help students learn the skills they need to succeed, so they can become leaders also.
