Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Landen District Curriculum

The English language arts curriculum focuses on helping students build the skills they need to read literature effectively. Students engage in analyses of literary works, learning how to cite textual evidence to support their analysis. Learners also work on identifying the central theme of a text and learn how to analyze its development over the course of the story. Students also examine how events in the story and dialogue between characters serve to move the action forward. Reading skills as they pertain to literature also include developing an understanding of unknown words and phrases.

Landen’s financial literacy curriculum includes a study of entrepreneurship that introduces students to the essential principles of starting a business. Learners explore the scope of entrepreneurship, including the long-term impacts it has on the nation’s economy. The different types of businesses one can start are studied as well, including non-profit, for-profit, and social organizations. Students also identify the personal characteristics of successful entrepreneurs.

Chalk Talk: Late Start Helps Students in Many Ways

It is becoming increasingly popular for schools, especially high schools, to begin their day later than the normal 8:00 am start time. Much research supports this idea. Studies show that by beginning the school day just 30 minutes or an hour later helps students raise their level of achievement. Performance in math, English, social studies, and science is seen at schools with later start times. There is also an associated increase in standardized test scores. Attendance also improves at schools with a later start time, and tardiness and truancies decrease as well. There are health benefits too. Since later start times better coincide with teenagers’ natural sleep patterns, fewer kids find the need to consume coffee and energy drinks, both of which have far too much caffeine for young bodies. One study also found that there is a significant reduction in the number of traffic accidents near schools when students start their day later.
