Langley District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The Prescribed Learning Outcomes (PLO) were designed at the provincial level by the BC Ministry of Education to create a standard for all students K-12 to reach a minimum goal in each subject for each school year. Teachers use this curriculum to plan their objective-based instruction, while administrators can be flexible in shaping the PLO to suit their district. Students are also encouraged to try out the different electives offered at the middle and high school and to become active in extracurricular activities.
We currently cover the following Langley-area school district: School District #35.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Langley District Curriculum
The curriculum starts by providing the fundamentals to students in reading, writing, math, science, history and languages - and increasingly infusing technology into the learning process - and then continues to build upon previously learned skills to more advanced levels of the subject. In Math, early learning in patterning and shape recognition is drawn upon in topics like algebra and geometry. The literacy skills that students are taught are also used in all courses and emphasis is placed on understanding the purpose of different texts.
The curriculum is flexible in that administrators and educators can use it as a framework to create new courses and deliver learning objectives in a way that best suits the learners in their classrooms. Instructors may also apply to create classes that the provincial curriculum does not cover, while students may likewise apply for independent studies. The PLO includes general guidelines for both, in and also covers International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement.

Chalk Talk: Choosing Post-Secondary Education
When looking at colleges, universities, and trade schools, students have a lot of factors to consider. It’s worth doing research to see what scholars and graduates say about every school they might consider applying toward, and with today’s technology that information is easier to find than ever. Students should also factor in tuition costs per year, and whether moving away from home is the right move. Steady income with potential advancement in a student’s hometown may be a good reason to stay, but finding a better job market and available fields of study may be a good reason to go. There are also plenty of study abroad programs that will allow new post-secondary students to experience other cultures worldwide.
