Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Laredo District Curriculum

The reading curriculum at Laredo schools begin by using books that may be familiar to children, such as the Berenstain Bears or Curious George. In this way, students learn that different authors may present information in different ways. As the students become older, they look at literature as a source of information and adventure. They also learn the elements that make up a story and how the author places their view in books.

Laredo Schools teach their students about social studies by beginning with introducing students to the people of their community that they see everyday, like the principal, or a police officer. The students continue to learn about the government and the documents that are behind the laws of the state and country. By the time they graduate, students will have become familiar with the people of their own state and country, but also those of other countries. They learn that each person impacts their country, or even the world.

Chalk Talk: Balanced Brain Activities

There have been theories presented about one side of the brain being more dominant or being responsible for different aspects of a person's life. Now there are ways to help a child strengthen both sides of the brain. This is thought to help digestion, the immune system and intelligence. One way to help balance the brain's strength is to have the child perform activities that cross the body. They can march in place while placing the right hand on the left knee, etc., or they can learn how to juggle. Another way to strengthen both sides of the brain at the same time is to ask the child to list as many words as they can beginning with the same letter. Repeat this activity every so often to see if they can think of more words. Finally a way to increase the amount of oxygen to the brain, thus improving brain function, is to enroll in a parent-child yoga class. Each of these activities are fun for the child and will help to balance the child's, and parents, brain-power.
