Chalk Talk: How to Study for the ACT or SAT

Studying for the ACT or SAT doesn’t have to be hard. Here are a few tips to help you get your best score: first, get your baseline score. There are plenty of practice tests online or in ACT and SAT books. Taking one of these will let you see what kind of score you would get without study time and tell you the areas that you need to improve in. Your second task is to set a goal. This can be based on time (i.e. finishing all of the questions in a section with three minutes to spare) or the score that you want to get. Once you’ve set a goal, decide how you want to study. There are many options available, such as ACT or SAT classes and tutors, books, phone and computer apps, or online help. Most of these options will also teach you how to use specific strategies for each section that will be helpful on test day. Finally, make a study schedule. You probably have a very busy life that includes, school, friends and family, hobbies, etc. Setting aside time that will be devoted to studying specifically for the test is very important. Remember to keep taking practice tests as well to determine how you’re improving.
