Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Laurel District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, the students are taught to decipher the meaning of words as they are used in context by using strategies in reading, such as having knowledge of word roots. The students also speak and write about various texts, fiction and non-fiction, and refer to the parts of the stories using the vocabulary of stanzas, chapters, subheadings, and scenes. The knowledge of story parts is also taught and presented by the students, as they will compare and contrast their viewpoints to the narrator’s viewpoint.

In Mathematics in grades K-12, standards include the teaching of numbers and operations in the area of fractions. The students will work with fractions that are equivalent in order to find the sum and difference of the fractions. They will also use their understanding of the concepts of fractions to multiply and divide equivalent fractions and mixed number fractions. Chalk Talk: Teaching Math: The Importance of Manipulatives

When teaching mathematics, regardless of the age group being taught, the use of manipulative is very beneficial. Manipulatives, such as sorting blocks of all shapes, mathematical cubes, equipment with objects to use to measure and define problems, and many more small objects for learning help the child actually see the math problem by touching and moving the objects about. Rather than simply watching the teacher or doing worksheets as the sole learning activity for a concept, the students are able to learn by doing and discovery with manipulatives.
