Laurens District and Curriculum
Laurens County School District 55 seeks to be “a system of excellence and equity in educational practices for each learner.” In order to provide excellence in the classroom, Laurens County has adopted the Common Core State Standards in Math and English Language Arts. These standards are the goals and expectations of skills and knowledge students must have in order to be prepared for college and careers.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Laurens District Curriculum
English Language Arts classes present students with a variety of texts, both literature and non-fiction. Students practice reading, synthesizing, and writing skills that can transfer into all other content areas. They develop evaluative skills by learning how to conduct independent, academic research. Beyond high school, the skills they learn are useful for the work they will do in the university setting and prepare them for success in the career world as well.
Math classes focus on fewer concepts in a given year than in the past, but invite students to study them at a greater depth. Students still learn the same things throughout the course of their academic career, however, through changing when they learn certain concepts the expectation is that they will have greater mastery and retention of ideas over the long term. For instance, early learning in patterning concepts sets the stage for understanding algebra in middle and high school.

Paying for college is a difficulty for many families, but with careful planning and a little bit of work, students can have their school paid for. Many schools offer scholarships based on GPA, standardized test scores (generally the ACT or SAT), leadership activities, volunteer experience, and extra-curricular activities. Students who are high achieving in any of these areas should seek scholarships from their universities for them. However, those who may not have as much success are not out of luck. There are many organizations willing to give away money to those who are willing to take the time to apply. Students who spend time each day utilizing internet searches and applying for scholarships can pay for all or most of their tuition if they are dedicated to the cause.
