Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lawton District Curriculum

In Math, students in grades K-12 must become proficient in the many areas of measurement. The units of measurement must be identified and used in the appropriate situations, such as the units of weight, length, mass, volume, time, and area. These units of measurement are taught in isolation, and students are to be able to recall which units are used for what measurement situation. For example, the students must be able to identify that a scale will determine the weight of an object in grams or milligrams, or that the ruler will determine the length in centimeters or inches.

In English Language Arts, the students become comfortable in speaking in front of a group, such as their classroom peers, by giving a variety of speeches, such as persuasive speeches, reciting poetry, role playing and acting, or how-to instructions. The students are taught how to write their speeches or ideas using the writing process from beginning to end, and the publishing aspect of the work is completed.

Chalk Talk: The Writing Process

Beginning in the primary grades, the students are exposed to many types of writing. Once the students develop writing skills in some form (depending on the grade level) the instructors must teach the process of writing. This helps the students organize their thoughts before putting them on paper. The writing process consists of brainstorming topics or subjects on a given topic, a rough draft of their writing, editing and revising with the help of peers and the teacher, the final draft and the publishing stage. Teaching the writing process is very important and not only helps the students organize their thoughts for the purpose of writing, but can help them organize their thoughts in other subject areas like preparing for tests in math, taking notes in social studies, or creating an outline in science.
