Leawood District and Curriculum
The curriculum of Blue Valley Schools closely follows the Community Strategic Plan. Professional Learning Communities within schools (PLCs) collaboratively identify the curriculum that must be taught as it correlates to the Common Core Standards in each subject area. PLCs further suggest formative and summative assessments to demonstrate student proficiency, prescribe intervention strategies to ensure all students experience success, and identify differentiation strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
We currently cover the following Leawood-area school district: Blue Valley Schools.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Leawood District Curriculum
The elementary curriculum provides students with the lasting foundation in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies that carry them through their later years. Students are introduced to many topics to see how each subject consists of distinct threads, and then deepen their abilities. For instance, when students begin to write, they master basic sight words, their names, and days of the week. By the end of elementary school, they are able to write short stories with these developing skills.
In middle and high school, students may elect to take courses in architecture and engineering, performing arts, visual arts, family and consumer science, business and computers, and world languages. Blue Valley also offers K-12 enrichment programs and mentoring, AVID, the CAPS program (Center for Advanced Professional Studies), and the ACT/SAT Prep Program to prepare students to enter the workforce and higher education. ACCESS teaches life skills to children with moderate to severe disabilities.

Chalk Talk: Building a Reading Relationship with Your Elementary Child
When your child enters elementary school, spending time reading with your child is one of the most important things you can do for his/her development. Visit your child’s school and work with teachers and librarians to select books with your child that are appropriate to his or her reading level. It is important to establish a Lexile reading level so you may help your child choose books that fall in his range. When reading with your child, ask questions about the book to ensure comprehension and to build a “reading relationship”. Ask who his/her favorite character is and why. Ask about the character’s conflict and make predictions about what will happen next. If a book is beyond your child’s reading level, read with your child until he or she feels comfortable in attempting to read it on his/her own. Make sure not to discourage the child from reading it as we don’t want a child’s interest in reading to ever be diminished. By being a reader yourself and modeling your love of reading during these formative years, your child will begin to see the value of reading and the joy you experience from a good book. Share these experiences with your child, who will take your lead and see that reading is a fun activity!
