Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Leduc District Curriculum

The curriculum in Leduc is based on the research and design of Alberta Education; the curriculum is a framework by which teachers are able to plan instruction so that it meets the expectations of learning for students in the province. When students move beyond the traditional core subjects and pursue programs like International Baccalaureate or an Environmental Education Program, these also have curriculum that describe what students are expected to learn and be able to do as they progress in their studies. These additional curriculum are approved for use based on providing clear, rigorous and assessable standards for student learning.

There are descriptions of what students are expected to learn within their subjects at each level, these represents the essential standards of learning. For instance, in Language Arts, students learn to critically evaluate writings for meaning as well, and learn to incorporate their own unique perspectives in their analyses of texts. They also explore the sociocultural and historical influences on writers of the past, and examine how fictional works often reflect the actual events of the time in which they were written.

Chalk Talk: Learning Expectations in the Arts Curriculum

Through their art classes, students are introduced to fine arts, performance arts, and have many opportunities to learn and perform music. These are valuable classes because they support creative and other types of thinking, but they also provide students with a background in the arts that they can draw upon throughout life. For instance, the cultural context in which various musical forms are created is studied as well. Basic musical notation is introduced, with students gaining the ability to read, write, and perform eighth notes, quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes. Additionally, the process of giving and receiving feedback is considered as well. Students offer critiques of major artworks, analyzing the artist’s viewpoints, intentions, and messages displayed in their work.
