Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lee’s Summit District Curriculum

Lee’s Summit district curriculum provides an excellent base of knowledge for its students, rooted in the firm belief that every student can succeed. Communications Arts curricula help to encourage a love of reading and writing, beginning with individual writing craft and reading practice in the early grades. Individualized instructor feedback is provided to ensure student progress and success. In upper grades, writing and literary analysis skills culminate in a thought-provoking opportunity to learn ways of personal expression.

In Mathematics, the curriculum engages younger children in the fundamentals of number recognition, whole number operations, and spatial relationships. Geometry, algebra, statistics and calculus, as well as Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, help students in upper grades learn to apply math to real-world scenarios. Across the curriculum, dual-credit courses provide additional opportunities for high school students to earn college credit.

Chalk Talk: Nature’s Greatest Actor – The Indonesian Mimic Octopus

Who says being a great actor has to come along with expensive lessons? The mimic octopus, Thaumoctopus mimicus, is found off the coasts of Indonesia—and wasn’t discovered by scientists until the 1990s. This incredible creature can change its shape and behavior to act like a number of other animal species, as a form of defense. It can mimic the poisonous spines of a lionfish, undulate flat along the seafloor like a flounder, flare out its limbs and change from white to black. When threatened by damselfish, it can change the shape of its long tentacles to match the body form of a poisonous sea snake. Earth’s oceans are filled with intriguing creatures, and new species are certainly still to be discovered!
