Chalk Talk: The Importance of ESL Programs

ESL, or English as a Second Language, has little by little become an important component in many school districts. It can be easy to take for granted the number of students who have not learned English as their first language yet who are enrolled in public schools across the nation. While many of these students are extremely gifted, in order for them to go far, they must have classes to help them reach a level of proficiency in the English language so that they have the opportunity to succeed or reach a higher level of understanding in their other classes. Not only is basic English language instruction important for these students, but also cultural instruction must be given. We think of world language courses as the normal place where culture is taught forgetting the importance of offering an intensive world languages course in English for our students at home who need it the most.
