Chalk Talk: Tips for Paying for College

While college remains incredibly expensive, there are a number of ways that students and families can reduce the impact on their pocketbooks. Students that are still in high school can take advantage of popular programs that allow them to earn college credit while still in high school. AP classes are a popular option at many schools, while dual-credit programs, which allow students to earn high school and college credit simultaneously, are gaining popularity. Another way to reduce college expenses if to explore community college options. Students who attend community college can get their first two years of schooling completed for a fraction of the cost, and do so without sacrificing quality of instruction. Lastly, strategically applying for financial aid is important in order to increase the chance of getting scholarships and grants, neither of which have to be paid back. There are all kinds of specialty scholarships available, for everything from making clothing out of duct tape to those based on race or ethnicity. Any of these methods will help offset expenses and make getting a degree less financially burdensome.
