Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Linden District Curriculum

Linden Public Schools have designed challenging curricula that meet or exceed the standards set for in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. These standards ensure that all students, regardless of school or location, receive the best possible education. The standards outline benchmarks for student learning in the following core areas: visual and performing arts, health and physical education, 21st Century life and careers, technology, world languages, social studies and science. The Common Core Standards Initiative governs language arts and mathematics separately.

The visual and performing arts standards are in place to ensure that students develop an appreciation for their creativity and the creativity of others, as well as an understanding of how to express one’s self without the use of language. Students are exposed to the creative processes involved in producing art of all kinds, including theater, dance, visual art and music. Chalk Talk: Improv Can Improve Learning

Finding ways to engage students in learning and help them to retain information is one of the primary challenges of classroom teachers. Some teachers have found the key to doing both – improvisation. Some might think that improv only has a place in drama classes, but that isn’t the case. Improvisation requires the highest order intellectual skills on Bloom’s Taxonomy – creating, applying and analyzing. Using improv helps students learn to quickly access information and apply it to actual situations. In that regard, improv is much like brain-training: the brain learns where information is stored and how to access that information in the most effective manner possible. Improv also affords students the opportunity to express their creativity and collaborate with their classmates.
