Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lindenhurst District Curriculum
The K-12 curriculum provides fundamental instruction in the following subject areas: English language arts, science, social studies, mathematics, art, music, and physical education. Each student has access to special education, academic intervention, and media/library resources. Character education and cultural awareness within the curriculum help students gain an appreciation for the unique ways in which other people lead their lives. Students also acquire a deeper understanding of the attitudes and perspectives that guide and direct the behavior of people from other cultures which adds to their ability to critically analyze and interpret information and ideas.
The secondary curriculum is set to prepare students for post-secondary education and work. Beyond increasingly rigorous core academic instruction, students will have the opportunity to take courses in business education, computer science, family and consumer science, foreign language, English as a second language, and practical arts (career training). In addition, students in the high school can take a variety of Advanced Placement (AP) courses to earn college credit and prepare for coursework that is more rigorous.

Chalk Talk: How to Foster Social and Emotional Growth
Children are complicated, but they need very little. Love, security, and honesty go a long way. Parents are their first models of behavior, and they are also the people who set the tone for their development. Of course, each child is different, and temperament, abilities, and illnesses may hinder appropriate growth; however, parents can ensure they cultivate social and emotional stability in their children. By providing children with attention—embracing, interacting, reading, etc.—parents are telling their kids that they are important, and they value their time together. This message can foster a sense of worth and demonstrate the importance of relationships. Parents should also allow children to be as independent as possible, trying new things, and even making mistakes. Honesty and sharing emotions are also necessary aspects of living; it’s through these lessons that children learn about empathy and how to react appropriately to others’ feelings. Providing children with stability is also essential to their sense of security, which bolsters confidence. Setting up daily routines, such as meal and nap times, play-dates, and other activities, will help them to feel in control and will provide them with valuable lessons about organization and trust.
