Lino Lakes District and Curriculum
K-12 learners in Lino Lakes attend one of two school districts. K-6 students have the option of attending Lino Lakes Elementary STEM School, which is part of the Forest Lake Area Schools. Centennial School District also provides services for K-6 students, as well as for students in grades 7-12. Both districts have a long track record of academic success. Vibrant learning spaces stimulate students’ imaginations and curiosity, and help them forge a love of life long learning. Additionally, students in Lino Lakes gain valuable skills they will need in order to be successful in college or career. Skills that allow students to analyze, problem solve, and evaluate information are developed across the curriculum.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lino Lakes District Curriculum
Lino Lakes students participate in an in-depth study of science in high school. Students learn about various concepts related to physical science. Learners develop an understanding of matter, including the structure of atoms and how that structure impacts the chemical composition of matter. Atomic structure is a central point of study as well. Students identify protons, neutrons, and electrons, as well as masses and electric charges. The periodic table is analyzed as well, with students identifying the arrangement of elements on the table.
Middle school social studies students in Lino Lakes explore various aspects of social studies, including citizenship and governance. Students discover various civic duties of citizens, including voting, reaching consensus, and expressing one’s opinions while respecting differing opinions from others. Learners also examine the relationship between citizens and their government in various types of government settings. Political philosophies that underlie the creation and operation of government systems are explored as well. Another central point of emphasis is the exploration of the relationships that the United States government maintains with other nations.

- Spanish Immersion Program Comes to Lino Lakes - Students in Lino Lakes that attend Lino Lakes Elementary STEM School have the option to enroll in the Spanish Immersion track. Kindergarten students begin the track and continue it throughout their time at the school. Students in this program achieve a high degree of bilingual fluency and literacy.
- Local Teacher Honored by the District - Centennial School District recently honored Shelly Boespflug for her service to the district. Ms. Boespflug has worked in the district for 24 years and was recognized for consistently going above and beyond in her efforts to help children become better readers.
- Teacher of the Year Honored for Her Dedication - Centennial School District has named its teacher of the year. Julie Cross, who has been with the district for 15 years, developed the district’s adult education curriculum, teaches night school, and works with individual students in order to ensure their success.

Chalk Talk: Dangers of Extended School Days
Making the school day longer has become a popular alternative for some school districts throughout the country. The impetus behind longer school days is to promote higher achievement for students, particularly in language arts and math. However, there are some negative aspects of a longer school day. First, the longer students are in school, the more likely they are to burn out. Extending the school day by even an hour may result in students tuning out the latter portion of the day, thereby negating any positive impacts that the longer day might have. Second, older students may have an after school job that would be impacted if the school day were to be extended. Related to that, kids that are involved in after school activities or sports wouldn’t get home until quite late. This, in turn, could negatively impact their ability to stay on top of homework assignments.
