Chalk Talk: How to Encourage Your Child to Read
There is a huge emphasis on reading in elementary school so that students can not only be literate, but have the tools to learn as they grow. You can help your child in this learning endeavor by providing a positive reading environment for your child. Begin by reading in front of your child and with your child. If you show support of reading they will be more likely to try it. Go to the public library where your child can check out books that interest them. Ask them questions about the books, what they liked, what characters they like and which books they prefer to others. This will give them a higher level of engagement with the books. If your child is curious about a topic, suggest that they find a book about it to understand it better. Reading with your child and alternating who will read aloud, you or your child, may also help your child to enjoy reading.
