Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Little Egg Harbor Township District Curriculum

The Little Egg Harbor Township School District and the Pinelands Regional School District work together to ensure that their curricula are aligned. This alignment is critical so that students move out of one district and into the other having all the knowledge and skills they need in order to have continued success in their junior high and high school years. Both districts adhere to the recommendations of the Common Core Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, which together lay out a framework of what should be taught at each grade level.

The language arts curriculum has been developed based on the guidelines of the Common Core Standards. In elementary language arts classes, students learn the basics of reading, writing, speaking and listening, which provide students with a solid foundation upon which to build as they advance to higher grades. Students in middle school add to their learning by identifying the plot, idea development and characters of a fiction story, and learn the meanings of words in specific contexts.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Social Studies

Social Studies classes offer students a glimpse into the past so they can understand the present and prepare for the future. This serves two purposes. First, students gain an appreciation of history and the struggles and triumphs of people that came before them. They develop an understanding of how things came to be, such as government and political institutions, laws and regulations, and social and cultural norms. Secondly, by studying the interconnected nature of past, present and future events, students acquire an understanding of how their actions and the actions of others have lasting impacts. This fosters a sense of citizenship and responsibility to be a member of society who makes informed decisions.
