Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Livonia District Curriculum

In Livonia Public Schools, a strong focus is put on teaching students to think critically and work independently. To support this, the curriculum in each content teaches attitudes towards learning as well as subject material. In the Language Arts, this means students learn to view themselves as readers and writers. In the Mathematics curriculum, there is an expectation that students become critical thinkers and problem solvers who recognize the most effective ways to solve different problems and communicate their work process.

Livonia Public Schools also offer several unique programs at the high school level. Franklin High School has a mission to “nurture analytical and creative 21st century problem solvers.” They also offer the International Baccalaureate Program which is a separate and very challenging curriculum taken by students around the world, preparing them for a global post-secondary life.

Chalk Talk: The Writing Process

The writing process is a method students use to write great stories and essays for school. During the first step, called brainstorming, students write down all the ideas they think of that fit with their topic. Then, students pick their best ideas and write a rough draft. The next step is to polish their writing until it is the best they can make it which is called revising and editing. If they take their time, the writing process will result in an outstanding piece of writing!
