Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lloydminster District Curriculum

The core curriculum is designed to introduce students to all academic subjects and give them the chance to gain a level of proficiency that will allow them to graduate with the appropriate foundation for their college or career choices. Students also acquire an understanding of the basic workplace skills needed to be successful, including effective communication, ability to work as part of a team, goal setting, and ability to meet deadlines. A connection is made between school and work as well, with students identifying the various skills and knowledge bases that are applied in the world of work.

There are many locally developed and internationally known programs also in use at the schools. Programs like Advanced Placement or a locally developed career or athletic program will have a curriculum designed specific to their needs. Such curriculum provide the expected learning outcomes specific to that program and have been approved for use. There are also programs that all students take part in such as community service and while helps to fulfill the curricular goal of educating the whole child.

Chalk Talk: The Role of a Personal Finance Curriculum

One of the relevant lie lessons that students should learn before they graduate are personal financial skills such as budgeting, savings, understanding interest rates and personal credit. Courses in business and economics can attend to many of these skills, but it can also be a function of all career related electives including culinary arts (how to budget for a restaurant) or outdoor education (how to plan supplies). Students identify characteristics that are necessary for obtaining and maintaining employment, such as a good work ethic, punctuality, and commitment to working as a member of a team. Maintaining financial security is also emphasized. Students learn about the dangers of relying exclusively on online sources to protect their privacy and data and how to be proactive about maintaining the security of their identity.
