Lockport District and Curriculum

Students in the Lockport City School District follow the Common Core Curriculum which was recently approved by the New York State Board of Regents for use in all of the public schools in New York State. The curriculum is focused on the basics of English & Language Arts, Science, Math, Social Studies so that students are prepared to use what they have learned in the real world and are prepared for the required Regents Exams. Students can also take courses in the arts and career fields, and students are expected to take part in community service projects.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lockport District Curriculum

In Math, students learn the basics of computation, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics and learn to apply what they have learned to everyday life. The curriculum across all studies is progressive in nature with students building upon their learning skills grade by grade. Students develop skills in equations and relationships, geometric and spatial relations, and ways to analyze quantitative data.

In English and Language Arts, students learn to read both fiction and nonfiction, and learn to write compositions and reports that utilize their reading material, and which are related to themselves and to the world around them. Students are expected to learn how to decode meaning in words and texts, developing the skills of discerning readership. Writing, for multiple purposes and audiences, is also a goal of the curriculum and developed over the years.

Keeping Informed: Recent Lockport Educational News

  • Swim News - In a recent swim meet, the Swim Lions from the Lockport High School were able to secure a major win against the Niagara Falls Frontier League. The final score was 102-72. The girls swim teams from Newfane were also able to achieve a win ensuring that they will at least tie for their league swim championship.
  • School to Work Program - The Lockport City School District is part of the School to Work Program which offers students the option to spend four weeks working in a variety of career options. This career exploration program allows students to really understand what different jobs are like so that when they graduate they have some idea of what job they might want to pursue. The School to Work program is part of the CEOP plan held at the Niagara Career & Technical Center located in Sanburn, New York.
  • Career Exploration Opportunity Program - Students in the Lockport Opportunity Projects (LOP), get to have hands on experience in twelve different careers when they participate in the district’s Career Exploration Opportunity Program known as CEOP which is being held at the Niagara Career & Technical Center. In the phase one of the program, students will learn about career options that are available.

Chalk Talk: Resources for Budding Astronomers

Science World is a website for kids all about understanding how the human body works, electricity, environmental science, and sustainability. The site is sponsored by the Science World nonprofit organization located in British Columbia, Canada, and provides all sorts of online games for kids that teach the basics of anatomy and physiology. Games and activities include the Roly J. Robot, the Eureka! Games and instructions on how to make rocket children can use to study Newton’s laws of motion. There are more than 350 activities for children to do with their parents.
