Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Logan District Curriculum

The elementary schools in the Logan City School District use the Accelerated Reader program to help students gain fluency and comprehension in reading, and deploy computerized testing and a variety of incentive structures to support students in their learning. They also use character development curricula to teach students to be responsible members of their community. Elementary schools offer dual language immersion programs in Spanish and Portuguese.

The curriculum encompasses courses that will prepare students for life after high school. The district offers language courses in French, Spanish, German, and Chinese. In Math, they offer courses through AP Statistics and AP Calculus, as well as courses in computer programming, career math skills, and several concurrent enrollment classes at Utah State University. The Sciences and Technology are also focused on and students are expected to develop process-oriented inquiry abilities that test assumptions and can work towards scientific innovation.

Logan District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Like all schools in Utah, Logan City School District follow the Utah Core Curriculum, which sets standards for students particularly in Math and English Language Arts that aim to make students college and career ready. The Math and English elements of the Utah Core are based on the nationwide Common Core State Standards, which are being implemented across the country.

Keeping Informed: Recent Logan Educational News

  • Bond Initiatives - The city has recently approved a bond levy which will allow the school district to grow its programs. Among the major areas that this new bond will fund are hiring new teachers in music, the arts, science, and more support for both at-risk students and academically talented students.
  • School Board News - The newest member of the Logan City School District Board of Education has over twenty years of experience in the classroom and in administration. Her specialty is special education, and she has worked at a variety of schools in Logan, and in elementary resource centers.
  • College Visits - Students from a Logan middle school went to visit Utah State University to learn more about college. While there, they met current USU students and faculty who were, like them, in ESL programs when they arrived in the US, and toured the campus. The goal was to convince them that college is a possibility and that possessing abilities in two languages leads to educational benefits.

Chalk Talk: Tools for Reading Skills

There are many programs that elementary schools are using to teach reading and literacy skills to children, which can have complicated terms and concepts that can be confusing. The purpose of many of these programs is to make sure that children are reading texts that are appropriate to their level of achievement, but allow them to be challenged and grow. Your child’s school will likely provide you with parent materials to make sure that you can support your child in choosing books that are in line with the reading philosophy being follows in the classroom. In addition, you can help your child by reading to them frequently, and by asking them to read to you about whatever interests them! Reading skills only improve with practice, so make sure that they get plenty of it!
