Chalk Talk: How to Make the Most of Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences can be a stressful undertaking for everyone involved. To make the most out of the one-on-one time you have with your child’s teacher, consider the following tips for conference preparations. First, be prepared. Talk to your child about his or her classes. Check their grades, ask about their homework and get their opinion about their classes and teachers. Write their responses down, along with any questions you might have for their teachers. Second, as you discuss your child with their teacher, take notes. What are the teacher’s comments or concerns? What advice do they have for improving your child’s performance? Take these notes home and go over them with your child. Make a plan to improve performance, or if your child is doing well, celebrate their success! Lastly, stay calm. Sometimes teachers don’t have all the answers or have to deliver bad news. No one wants to hear that their child isn’t performing well, but with your cooperation and support, your child can get on the road to success.
