Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Los Alamos District Curriculum

The Common Core Curriculum provides a standardized approach to curriculum with an emphasis on providing skills that students will be able to use in the workforce. In Math the focus is on students learning a finite number of topics in an intensive educational approach. Students learn about computation, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability in a progressive manner, with the curriculum building on skills learned in the previous year.

In English and Language Arts students learn the basics of reading, writing, listening and speaking so that by graduation from high school they are fluent in using the English language. Reading material includes both literature and informational text so that students are exposed to the type of reading they might need to do on the job. In both Mathematics and English and Language Arts, students concentrate on developing the skills they will need to pursue further education or to be successful in the workplace.
