The census designated place Los Chaves, New Mexico is served by the Belen Consolidated School District. The mission of the district is to prepare all students in the district to be contributing citizens and ready for their future. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Los Chaves District Curriculum

The Belen Consolidated School District has implemented the Common Core Curriculum in the areas of English and Language Arts and Mathematics. In English and Language Arts students learn how to read, write, speak and listen. Students are introduced to a variety of reading materials including both literature and informational text. An emphasis is placed on the development of critical analysis skills and excellent research skills. Writing development includes both expository and creative writing.

In Mathematics, the focus is on becoming literate in a finite number of math subjects including computation, algebra, geometry, statistics, measurement and proportional reasoning. The goal is for students to be able to have confidence in applying their knowledge to higher math and to solve work related problems. In both English and Language Arts and Mathematics students build on their skill level in a progressive manner as they develop mastery of the core subjects.

Keeping Informed: Recent Los Chaves Educational News

  • Performing Arts - The Advanced Drama Group at Belen High School recently presented the comedy play “The Boy Who Killed Pancho Villa.” The play depicts the city of Tombstone in 1912 at rodeo time. The fun and farcical play was presented at the Belen High School Auditorium in Belen, New Mexico on three consecutive days. During the year, this group provides many different shows for family audiences.
  • Students in Transition - The Belen Consolidated School District announces that pursuant to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act students who in the district who are currently homeless can obtain help through the district to make school life easier including school supplies, school uniforms, winter coats, and other items. Community members who would like to serve as volunteers are welcome to help.
  • Programs at the Senator Willie Chavez Educational Center - The former Belen Valley State Park now called the Senator Willie Chavez Educational Center under the jurisdiction of the Belen Consolidated School District has been offering educational programs to schools, private and public organizations since 1983. Current programs include nature walks, bird watching, outdoor classroom experiences, and camping.

The DAWCL database has over 10,000 records of children’s books providing parents, teachers and librarians with information on the best in children’s literature. The database lists award winning books with information on each type of award for English speaking books published in the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, England and Ireland. There is also a description of each book and the records are searchable by a variety of methods including title, author and keywords. This database of book records was developed by Lisa R. Bartle, a librarian at California State University at San Bernardino.
