Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Los Ranchos de Albuquerque District Curriculum

The APS district utilizes the Common Core State Standards in all their schools. Common Core provides a consistent progressive curriculum with an emphasis on providing students with up to date skills that are needed in the workforce and for college. In English and Language Arts students learn to read and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Reading material includes both literature and informational text of the type used across the curriculum.

In Mathematics, students focus in on becoming literate in computation, algebra, geometry, statistics, measurement and proportional reasoning. The coursework is progressive and students build on the skills they learned the previous year. The goal is for high school students to be able to apply their learned math skills to real life situations and higher math. The curriculum focuses on helping students to attain skills of critical thinking, problem solving and to find and analyze information.
