Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Los Ranchos de Albuquerque District Curriculum

The APS district utilizes the Common Core State Standards in all their schools. Common Core provides a consistent progressive curriculum with an emphasis on providing students with up to date skills that are needed in the workforce and for college. In English and Language Arts students learn to read and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Reading material includes both literature and informational text of the type used across the curriculum.

In Mathematics, students focus in on becoming literate in computation, algebra, geometry, statistics, measurement and proportional reasoning. The coursework is progressive and students build on the skills they learned the previous year. The goal is for high school students to be able to apply their learned math skills to real life situations and higher math. The curriculum focuses on helping students to attain skills of critical thinking, problem solving and to find and analyze information.

Keeping Informed: Recent Los Ranchos de Albuquerque Educational News

  • Student Mementos for Conference - The Council of the Great City Schools recently held their 57th annual conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Students in schools located in the Albuquerque Public School District prepared individual mementos given out at the conference including tinwork, postcards and other creative forms of artwork. In all more than 3,000 pieces of artwork were created to gift the visiting 1,200 educators from the biggest school districts in the country who traveled to Albuquerque for the conference. Students in fourth grade at Desert Ridge Middle School decided on creating folk art pieces from tin such as business card holders. Other fourth grade students made old style postcards with a New Mexico theme. All the gifts are provided as a show of appreciation for the educators.
  • Water & Energy Conservation - The Albuquerque Public School District recently met with representatives from public utilities in an effort to brainstorm ideas for saving energy, water and money. To achieve this, the district created a Water and Energy Conservation Committee which will work toward identifying ways in which the district can achieve cost and usage reductions. Currently the district spends approximately $50,000 per day for electricity and natural gas, water and sewage control. The new committee includes members from the school staff, the local water utility and other utilities.
  • Discovery Education - Two schools in the APS district who utilize Discovery Education, a digital resource were recently featured in a virtual event which discussed the importance of transitioning to online and digital resources. Both Eubank Elementary School and McKinley Middle School participated in the educational event which included a discussion of the role of parents in the digital age.

One of the most interesting and useful websites on the Internet is the National Museum of the American Indian. At this site parents and teachers will find multiple resources to use when helping students to learn about the Native American culture. In the educational section there is a guide to Haudenosaunee culture the confederation of people which included the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora tribes. In addition, there is information on how early Native Americans lived including their ceremonies, native dress and art. There are also videos on famous Native Americans both past and current. The National Museum of the American Indian is a part of the Smithsonian.
