Loyalist District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The Limestone and the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic Districts use the Ontario Curriculum to provide an overview for subject-area learning. The curriculum is divided up by the content areas and each subject has a framework that details the learning progression students will take from kindergarten through grade 12. The core curricular experience is also supported by curricular guidelines established for Catholic Education, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and other programs approved by the Ministry of Education. The additional programs that students may join such as Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate rely on core academic knowledge which is enhanced by college level work or internationally-focused projects and independent inquiry.
We currently cover the following Loyalist-area school districts: Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, Limestone District School Board.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Loyalist District Curriculum
The curriculum for English is organized around oral communication, reading, writing, and media studies. These are integrated in their presentation so that students have texts of all sorts to respond to in discussion or written analysis. Multiple outcomes are intended in students' English education such as the ability to recognize point of view and evaluate texts, and the ability to appreciate the cultural awareness raised by literature. Students are meant to understand the ways in which the language can be used formally and informally and to work on developing their writing abilities.
The curriculum for Math is laid out so that students become able to mathematically reason and prove their answers, reflect on their process and methods, choose appropriate computational tools, connect and represent quantitative data, and to be able to communicate in the language of mathematics. In Science, the goal is for students to understand the scientific principles behind structures and mechanisms, forces of energy and matter, and principles of life and earth science. Particularly during the elementary years, student learning is accomplished through hands-on lessons and projects in these topics.

Chalk Talk: Instructional Technology Professionals
Instructional technology professionals are a significant asset to schools and support teachers as they learn to integrate technology into their teaching and lesson plans. It is impossible for administrators to provide teachers with all the professional development they need, so this is why having a school instructional technology specialist always on hand can be extremely beneficial to all the teachers in the building. Instructional technology specialists often collaborate with teachers and principals on lessons that effectively use technology to enhance learning. Some individuals who pursue this area even learn such skills as writing grants to obtain technologies for classrooms and schools and understanding district technology plans and budgets.
