Chalk Talk: Value of Mentoring in Schools

Mentoring programs have gained popularity in recent years as research has shown that mentoring has a positive impact on a student’s desire and ability to stay in school and achieve their potential. Research shows that children who have a mentor are 52% less likely than their peers to skip school. By helping kids with their homework, mentors help young people gain the skills they need to stay on top of their studies, such as time management and organizational skills. As kids have more and more success with class assignments and exams, they experience improved self-esteem, which in turn promotes better attitudes about education. Kids who have a mentor consequently demonstrate improved classroom behavior and reduced discipline referrals. There are social benefits as well. Students who spend time with a mentor exhibit stronger interpersonal communication skills, greater self-confidence, and improved decision-making skills.
