Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Macedonia District Curriculum

Math students in Macedonia are required to take Algebra I. In that course, students work with expressions. Learners acquire the ability to interpret expressions, and learn to write expressions in order solve problems as well. Students learn to reason with equations and inequalities, developing an understanding of how to solve equations and inequalities in one variable. Systems of equations are also studied, with students using reasoning to solve problems presented with those systems.

Fine arts students in Macedonia have the option to take part in a study of the visual arts. The arts curriculum is divided into three separate, yet interconnected modules. In the perceiving and knowing strand, students focus on developing an understanding of artistic elements, procedures, and styles. Students compare and contrast various forms of art and observe how other artists express details, themes, and ideas. In the producing and performing module, students learn to create their own artwork. Students must demonstrate an understanding of the technical skill and craftsmanship necessary to create art.

Chalk Talk: Value of Mentoring in Schools

Mentoring programs have gained popularity in recent years as research has shown that mentoring has a positive impact on a student’s desire and ability to stay in school and achieve their potential. Research shows that children who have a mentor are 52% less likely than their peers to skip school. By helping kids with their homework, mentors help young people gain the skills they need to stay on top of their studies, such as time management and organizational skills. As kids have more and more success with class assignments and exams, they experience improved self-esteem, which in turn promotes better attitudes about education. Kids who have a mentor consequently demonstrate improved classroom behavior and reduced discipline referrals. There are social benefits as well. Students who spend time with a mentor exhibit stronger interpersonal communication skills, greater self-confidence, and improved decision-making skills.
