Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Manchester District Curriculum

Core instruction encourages students to explore the world around them to gain a greater understanding of mathematical and scientific concepts. Within mathematics, The Everyday Mathematics Parent Connection, as well as resources and parent guides for each elementary grade level, ensures that the parents and guardians of students are kept well-informed. Science courses delve into the Biological and Physical Sciences, as well as Earth and Space Science at the Secondary level.

Six of the elementary schools within Manchester School District have implemented the America’s Choice Pearson program as their Language Arts focus. This program allows instructors to work on improved literacy and focus while meeting the needs of their diverse students. As students progress through the program there are a variety of benchmarks and target skills built in to ensure success and comprehension. At the middle and high school levels, students focus on reading and writing and the integration of these two important skills in their everyday lives.

Chalk Talk: The Difference Between Persuasive and Argumentative Essays

While both essay types require you to be convincing, the argumentative essay goes one step further from the persuasive. The persuasive essay asks a writer to present their argument as the only viable option. On the other hand, the argumentative essay presents the writer’s argument while also taking into account possible counter-arguments and explaining why they are incorrect. The argumentative essay, therefore, is a more balanced form of persuasion. It concedes that there are others who may disagree, while presenting thoughtful reasons why the writer’s position is still preferable.
