Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mandeville District Curriculum

The St. Tammany Parish Public School District has implemented the state approved Common Core Curriculum in all schools. In English and Language Arts, students learn the basics of the English language including reading, writing, listening and speaking. An emphasis is placed on the development of such skills as reading for evidence, research, and critical analysis. Reading material includes both informational text and literature so that students are prepared for the type of reading material they may encounter in their post-secondary life.

In Mathematics, students focus in on a limited number of core math subjects including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics and proportional reasoning. Students build on their math skills year by year and learn to apply what they have learned to more difficult math problems. Speed, accuracy in solving math problems and being able to demonstrate why and how a math rule should be used are all essential to math success.

Chalk Talk: Learn about the Voyage of the Mayflower

At MayflowerHistory.com students, parents and teachers can view all kinds of information about the Mayflower voyage, the passengers and the early Pilgrims. The site which was created by Caleb Johnson an author and historian is twenty years in the making and has grown in terms of its access, the information and appeal. On the site there is a complete passenger list for the Mayflower and three other early ships. Part genealogy and part history the site brings to the life with drawings of the interior of the Mayflower and a description of all the rooms and what they were used for, the ships provision lists, and information on what happened to the Mayflower after its historic trip to the New World. Also included on the site is information how the early Pilgrims lived including their homes, their diet, their religion, what they wore, and their weapons. In addition, students can also read about the Wampanoag tribe, their language and their leaders. A great site for learning about the First Thanksgiving, early Colonial history and it is also a wonderful introduction to the study of genealogy.
