Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mankato District Curriculum

Online resources, mobile app suggestions and reading challenges are a large aspect of Mankato Area Public Schools’ media center, which ties into the extensive technology education courses. Students are taught ethical participation in a global society and technological concepts as well as information literacy. Visual arts are also greatly supported throughout the curriculum, asking students to communicate ideas visually.

A unique Youth in Government program culminates with a student model legislative assembly at the state capital while extra curricular activities such as Math League take core curriculum outside the classroom. Social Studies classes focus on local, state and national history in order to ensure students become responsible and engaged citizens. As students progress in the Social Studies curriculum, they are also introduced to concepts such as politics, economics and sociology, preparing them for college level coursework.

Chalk Talk: Balancing Technology and Education

Students are continuously plugged in at home and at school, but is technology being utilized effectively? If the instructional components aren’t taken into consideration, technology can become a hindrance rather than an aid. In fact, some of the best classes take students outside or off campus to explore the world around them. Technology is best used as a supplement to rather than the focus of core academic learning. Students thrive in hands on scenarios and solving real world problems through first-hand experience. As students progress, it's important for parents to see if the balance between technology use and other methods is being struck.
