Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mantua Township District Curriculum

The guiding force behind curriculum development in the districts is the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. Established by the state board of education, these standards outline what students should be able to learn and understand at each grade level. Standards are in place for technology, 21st Century life and careers, social studies, health and physical education, the arts, world languages and science. Math and language arts curricula are developed according to the learning targets set forth in the Common Core State Standards.

A central component of the Health and PE curriculum is the interpersonal communication strand. Students learn how to express their feelings, needs and wants in a manner that is respectful, healthy and safe. They learn skills that help them negotiate with others, while also learning how to advocate on behalf of themselves and others. Skills for effectively communicating with others – including people from different cultures – are taught and practiced, to ensure that students have the tools they need to engage in fruitful and meaningful conversations with people.
