Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Manville District Curriculum

Curriculum development in the Manville School District is a collaborative effort between administrators, teachers, parents, students and community members. This group is responsible for ensuring that the curriculum is properly aligned to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards as well as the Common Core State Standards. In so doing, the district ensures that the quality of education Manville students receive is commensurate with the guidelines of state and national standards.

The social studies curriculum includes a study of citizenship issues in the 21st Century. In elementary school, students devise an advocacy project in which they inform their school community about a local issue of importance. Students also identify practices that are unfair or discriminatory, and offer potential solutions to those problems. Middle school students learn about how to work effectively with people of differing points of view. Students engage in mock legislative sessions and debate topics respectfully. In high school, learning focuses on individual and human rights. Students analyze current laws and determine how they might violate an individual’s rights.

Chalk Talk: How Technology Is Used in the Classroom

While there are some negative aspects of having a highly technological classroom, the benefits for students far outweigh the detriments. Technology allows children to learn at a pace that is comfortable for them. For example, students who struggle to read can use a tablet and headphones to listen to a text passage. Access to technology provides children with a virtually unending storehouse of educational materials. Students can access online encyclopedias, educational games and demonstrations that increase their depth of understanding of a subject. In our highly globalized society, being able to effectively collaborate with others around the globe is an important skill. Technological classrooms allow students to do just that, by working on projects with children from other parts of the world.
