Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Maple Ridge District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum has been designed to focus on a range of literacy and communication strategies which students can use in all their studies. When students study literature, they learn how to examine the manner in which characters develop over the course of a text and how events unfold. Students interpret words and phrases in a text to understand their literal, figurative, and connotative meanings. An analysis of the structure of texts is undertaken as well, in which students determine how the various passages of a text relate to one another.

In seventh grade, students complete a career inventory, which helps them create their four-year academic plans. Once in high school, students have a number of options or pathways to pursue. The secondary curriculum is designed to prepare students for attending college or participating in the work force. Students receive training through appropriate course work, electives, extracurriculars and special events, such as college visits.

Chalk Talk: What Are 21st Century Performance Standards?

A new buzz phrase in the world of education is "21st Century Performance Standards" which has become a focus in the broad curriculum that students receive. The 21st Century Performance Standards is a view of the curriculum that suggests that the central focus should be on core academics integrated with modern, contextual themes. From that basis, students should explore three areas of focus that will prepare them for post-secondary life: Learning and Innovation Skills, Information, Media and Technology Skills, and Life and Career Skills. These categories allow for student choice and decision-making in regards to future goals, but ensure that all students have the requisite skills to be successful at work or learning after high school.
